The CUNY Fatherhood Academy at LaGuardia Community College is an
intensive 4-month (3-day a week) training program which is sponsored by
the NYC Young Men’s Initiative.
We are once again in the recruiting stages and are specifically
targeting young fathers between the ages of 18 and 24 with or without a
High School Diploma or GED. Our next semester will begin in March 2014.
Orientations will begin the end of January 2014.
The program is designed to provide opportunities to young fathers such
as Education (High School Equivilency Exam/College Preparation), College
Enrollment, Job Development/Job Placement, various workshops on
parenting, career counseling, life-skills specific to young fathers,
financial literacy and best health practices. Metro Cards will be given
to program participants as well as incentives to promote family support.
We will also provide opportunities for fathers to support and strengthen
their bond with their children by sponsoring family friendly events.
Our overall goal is to help these fathers help themselves by obtaining
the skills they need to become self sufficient and in turn accept the
responsibility to remain or become part of their children’s lives.
The program is holistic in nature and provides real opportunities for
young fathers to become successful.
I would like to encourage you or your staff to give us a call if they
have any young fathers in mind that can benefit from this program.
